President
Craig Judson's President's Pen, March 2010
In the past few months our calendar has been so full that we have had to postpone some excellent program ideas. This is a wonderful problem to have. We continue each week to meet the religious and social needs of the congregation through Shabbat services, Kiddush luncheons, preschool, religious school, and adult education programs, sisterhood and men’s club activities, Torah study, Friday night dinners and musical Shabbat services, committee meetings and social gatherings, and all of the other life cycle events that arise day in and day out.
By the time you read this article, we will have celebrated Purim with the ever vivacious Megillah reading, hamantashen (thank you Sisterhood), and brightly colored costumes. On March 6th, our Men’s Club will lead the morning Shabbat services, not wanting to be out done by Sisterhood who similarly led services in January.
Then before we know it, Passover will be upon us. Yes, the first seder is Monday, March 29th. It is already time for families to gather, retell the story of the exodus from Egypt, sing, eat, and then wait while the children search for the afikomen. Each year our family sedarim bring a new sense of renewal, as little ones (great nieces and great nephews for Jill and me) join the family celebration, bringing a true meaning to the youngest of the four children who do not yet know how to ask. Our own children, now young adults, bring with them friends from college and the soon to be in-laws and their family to join in our holiday celebration. Preparing for Pesach is a lot of work - cleaning out cupboards, moving furniture, setting the tables, polishing the silver, shopping, cooking, and then doing most of it all over again for the second seder - yet we look forward to connecting with our heritage, fulfilling the mitzvot, and sharing the holiday with our family and friends. It adds richness to our lives.
For those who enjoy a communal experience, please join CBS for the traditional second seder to be held on Tuesday, March 30th at 6:30pm in the social hall. Thanks once again to B’nai Shalom’s own Denise Ezial for preparing the Passover meal. This seder marks Rabbi Sunshine’s first and Hazzan Dinkin’s 19th time leading our synagogue seder. Please make your reservations early through the CBS office.
If you missed the General Membership meeting on February 21st, we adopted a significant revision to the CBS By-laws. The last major revision was in 2003 when we put into place the guidelines for an effective Pulpit Committee, a committee which we hope not to activate again for many, many years. A special committee, chaired by education committee chair Stacy Frauwirth and comprised of present and past Board members, spent months reviewing our old By-laws, conducting research, and identifying ways to bring our By-laws into conformity with our more recent practices and needs for the future. Most importantly, the structure of the B’nai Shalom Board of Directors was altered to provide better clarity of responsibility, reduce some of the daily duties of the President (now we do it, when I am nearing the end of my term!), and providing for clear expectations of leadership succession.
Now we turn our attention to planning for the spring social events, a major social fund raiser in June, working on the budget for the next fiscal year, selecting a slate for next year’s officers and directors, and, yes, beginning preparation for the High Holy Days.
As I have said before, the life blood of our congregation and of our community depends upon ALL of us actively participating, taking ownership of OUR synagogue, volunteering to become active members on committees and special programs, and supporting the needs of our community. With all of the programs, classes, religious activities, and social functions, CBS offers something for everyone - you only have to reach out and grab it. As we enter the season of freedom, emergence of hope, and wishes for better days ahead, let us all work together to meet new friends, celebrate life’s blessings, and continue to make B’nai Shalom our special spiritual home.
L’shalom,
Craig L. Judson
