President Craig JudsonPresident Craig Judson's President's Pen, September 2008
Shana Tova. As we begin the new year, it is time to look back and reflect upon the past year. This past year has been filled with many wonderful events and personal challenges for many of us. The transition to a new Rabbi, moving forward with the renovation of our facilities, many great social gatherings like the party honoring Hazzan Dinkin, the Rabbi’s installation, the party honoring Rayna Arnold’s four years as president, the hiring of Rabbi Jen Flam to serve as our Director of Congregation Learning, the development of the new and inspiring Anniversary Shabbat celebrations each month, our annual Labor Day picnic, and the involvement of new faces in leadership positions chairing committees and on the board ....just to name a few...things are buzzing here at B’nai Shalom. Of course, outside of CBS, world events such as war, the high price of gas, and the economic downturn leave many of us concerned.

However, the one constant which has withstood the “test of time” is our strong dedication to our teachings, to Torah, and to building a better community. Through good times and tough times, through simcha and tragedy, life cycles and quiet periods...Judaism is our constant. Love of Torah and our teachings bring us closer together. Shared stories and spiritual paths are our guiding light.

Living not just a Jewish life, but living Jewishly every day is our challenge and our hope. As we begin a new year, let us rejoice for all of our accomplishments and dedicate ourselves to recommitment to make our community strong and vibrant, ever changing and evolving, fresh and welcoming to all, and bring relevance to our lives.

I want to welcome the many new families who have joined B’nai Shalom in the past months. We look forward to getting to meet you and participate with you in our many programs.

“CBS Celebrates” continues to be our theme as we introduce a new and exciting program this year...Synaplex. Synaplex encourages different opportunities for involvement and participation; it fosters creative programming, and builds a stronger, more dedicated community. Look for more information during the High Holy Days.

Speaking of the High Holidays, we welcome back Rabbi Mark Goodman to lead our contemporary service. He was well received last year and led a wonderful service. As with years past, tickets are required for admittance to all services to ensure seating and security for our membership. If you need to purchase tickets for relatives, please contact the office or our treasurer, Lynn Levine.

The Religious Committee and our clergy have been working diligently to plan a better pace for the services this year. A few subtle changes have been planned to keep the service moving and ending earlier. Rabbi Jen is planning a super HH Youth Program and Family Service which have spiritual, educational, and liturgical substance, and which also complements our “child care” and decorum needs. Check in for youth services begins at 9:30 am. All children will be required to check in with a parent for security purposes. Please invite your non-member friends with young children or grandchildren to attend our Family Services.

Get ready for the first step in the renovation of our synagogue. In November, we will begin the remodel of the sanctuary!!! First, electrical upgrades, lighting, fans, and preparation for the new sound system...then Jerusalem stone columns. In December, we move into big construction with the enlarged Bima, ramp, new Aron HaKodesh, sound system, carpet, paint, and pews! After all of the planning, it is sooooooo exciting to get the project off the ground and into fruition with this first phase. I will explain more during my president’s address on Rosh Hashana.

I want to thank Rabbi Fisher, Hazzan Dinkin, Rabbi Jen, the incredible office and support staff, the religious committee, and your Board of Directors for their dedication and commitment this past year. So many details are required to plan for the holidays, and everyone’s assistance, guidance, and participation is invaluable. I wish you all good health, prosperity, peace, and continued spiritual contentment in the coming year.

B’Shalom,

Craig L. Judson
