What a wonderful spirit and feeling we have at B’nai Shalom. The holidays are now over, but the wonderful feeling and the way we ushered in the new year will not be easily forgotten.
As I reflect upon the ruach and spiritual connection so many of you commented upon during and following the holidays, we offer a “Yasher Koach” to so many congregants who helped make our religious services and related activities flow so smoothly. Of course, Rabbi Fisher’s spiritually connecting sermons and short commentaries and stories added much to our services. Hazzan Dinkin, with both his davening, commentaries, and moving music selection helped set the mood. The choir sounded as strong as ever, especially from the off-bima location which enhanced the choir’s acoustical sound. Bill Gourdin and Ziva Bitansky davened beautifully; our Torah readers and Haftorah daveners were well prepared; everyone who had honors kept the services flowing; the ushers provided great assistance; and the office and custodial staff made sure all was in order. Also, Rabbi Mark Goodman, who once again lead a well attended Contemporary Service, enriched us with his stories and wisdom.
The Erev Shabbat Sukkot outdoor dinner was attended by nearly 150 congregants - “from babies to bubbes.” Again, a terrific ruach was present as we joined together as an active, vibrant community. Yasher Koach to Anton Ennik, Greg and Joanne Knell, and Myrna Kimmelman for their hard work and terrific barbecue chicken dinner. The celebration continued with the Sunday family Sukkot program planned by Rabbi Jen which was a lot of fun for members of all ages and, once again, well attended. We concluded the holidays with the spirited Simchat Torah celebration. Opening the entire Torah and exploring its hidden treasurers is always exciting.
B’nai Shalom sure is alive with excitement, quality programming, and opportunities for all.
Our preschool, religious school, and Midrasha programs create wonderful, lively activity. I cannot help but notice that the shul is alive with little voices learning about our heritage and rituals, just like we all did a “few” years ago. It is wonderful to see the kids hugging and high fiving their Jewish friends. Their faces beaming, the laughs, the smiles . . . it is obvious that our children are enjoying their religious school experience. Kudos to Rabbi Jenn, Liz Kaufman, and Devra Arons, and their wonderful faculty members who are so dedicated to our children. You all deserve a special todah rabah from the entire congregation.
But there is so much more going on at CBS. During the holidays, I highlighted many of our recent accomplishments and how the Board is providing leadership with social, religious, and education programming. Our attention now turns to further programming, committee development, and the smooth administration of the shul. Want to join in? In fact, as you all know, our dedicated congregant, Moshe, has been thrilled with his active involvement, and the education of his children; he is proud of being part of the B’nai Shalom family. B’nai Shalom does not just provide regular Shabbat services, B’nai Mitzvot, life cycle events, and an education for all ages. We are more than just a “community.” We are Jews who have a common bond, a commitment to each other at all times. Not just when invited to the mitzvah party, but in times of critical need. We are family - the family of B’nai Shalom.
May the coming month bring us all a wonderful spirit to enjoy the gift of life at B’nai Shalom.
B’shalom,
Craig Judson
