Gan Shalom Plans Fall Opening
by Liz Kaufman, Preschool Director

In Judaism, it is a parents’ responsibility to teach and educate their children. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet spell Av, father, and the Hebrew word for parents, Horim, comes from the same root as moreh, teacher. Parents are the most important teachers that their children will ever have and they play a crucial role in their child’s development. They set the standards, transmit ideals and give their children a sense of values that will guide them along their way. Parents provide this type of teaching in their home, when they are “walking on the road, when they lie down and when they rise up.”

While each family’s journey is unique and woven from generations of threads, the torah connects our strands and tells us that we must teach and learn from one another. To enhance this journey, Gan B’nai Shalom will open this fall and offer a high quality early childhood program for children ages 2 through 5 years. Inspired by Jewish values, Gan Shalom will provide opportunities for children’s exploration and self-expression, as we encourage each child to develop as an individual to his or her fullest potential. Our goal is to make learning exciting through a hands-on developmental approach. We encourage the children to be creative and independent thinkers, as they increase their self-confidence, enhance their independence, and develop a sense of responsibility. Judaism is fully integrated into our preschool curriculum. The child will become familiar with ritual observances surrounding Shabbat, holidays, and kashrut. They will sing, dance, learn short Hebrew prayers and blessings and develop a Hebrew vocabulary related to our daily activities and holidays. Most importantly, the children will deepen their Jewish values and develop a strong sense of community.

As many of you saw at our wonderful open house last month, classrooms one through four are being transformed into the preschool. We are in the process of obtaining our state license, purchasing materials, and hiring staff. Registration is in progress and in September there will be twenty-six energetic children enrolled in our two classes. Your support and enthusiasm for the preschool has been incredible. With your partnership, Gan B’nai Shalom is truly becoming a reality. Together we will share our heritage with the youngest generation, so they will continue to carry on our traditions.
