CBS and 'Loaves & Fishes'
by Robert Clayton

The 4th Monday of each month 10-14 volunteers from our community arrive at St. Michaels Church in Concord, and four hours later they’ve produced a great meal from whatever materials are available for the 170-260 people who come to the door. They also offer a smile, a friendly word, and their day is made when someone says, “Thank you, Great Meal,” and asks for seconds!

I know little of the background of “Loaves & Fishes” and knew even less when the Rabbi called – now almost 5 years ago – and asked that I take over from Sophie Broche. I thought the Rabbi made a strange choice: I’m noted for regularly burning water; but for a while I was able to volunteer my wife (Reva) and my son (Daniel) who can be found in the kitchen every month. I discovered that we were the most recent of a long line of CBS volunteers, going back something more than 17 years, who commit up to 4 hours one day a month to feed the hungry. CBS can be proud of the character and commitment of the generations of volunteers from our synagogue who have given of themselves.

I could, and probably should, wax eloquent about the special character and talents of Bob Golden, Bob Levine, Howard Bulos and the others who are there every month to work in the kitchen, the serving line, and busing dishes, and Gittiy Altman, who can only be faulted by piling the food almost too high on the plates. I can also look back over the many volunteers who have contributed: Leona Goldberg, of blessed memory, who always had a friendly comment and a bright smile, among them.

So, if you’re available for 2-4 hours on the 4th Monday of the month, and want to find out more about what we do, you’re invited!
