Contemporary
Services
We are once again delighted to have Rabbi Mark Goodman lead our Contemporary Services. Rabbi Goodman is a teacher at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay (in San Francisco), and is also the Director of Community Outreach for the School. His goal is to instill in our youth the importance of volunteerism and community service. Rabbi Goodman’s main interest in Judaism, and his primary draw to the study of Talmud, resides in its tenets of social justice.
Family
Services
Family Services are designed for families with young children (pre-K). Services will be celebrated on the morning of the first day of Rosh Hashanah and the morning of Yom Kippur in the B’nai Shalom Social Hall. Services will be 45 minutes in duration and will begin promptly at 9:00 AM on Rosh Hashanah and 10:00 AM on Yom Kippur. On Rosh Hashanah, apples & honey and appropriate brachot in the courtyard of the Social Hall will follow the service.
If you know of people with young children in the community – who are not affiliated with our synagogue but would like to attend Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur services – then our Family Service may be “the place” for them. Please invite them to call the B’nai Shalom Office to reserve tickets. Although there is no charge for these tickets, we must control attendance due to fire regulations and medical and security precautions; therefore, please encourage people to call as soon as possible.
Youth
Services
High Holy Days Youth Services/Programs are an integral part of the CBS Religious School curriculum. The Youth Services/Programs are under the direct supervision of our Director of Congregational Learning, Rabbi Jennifer Flam, who has carefully selected the staff and programming. All Kindergarten through 5th grade students are required to attend, and participate in the Youth Services/Programs on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur morning. Students entering grades 6 & 7 (and older) should be attending the adult services. Parents/Guardians are responsible for the supervision of their children unless the child is checked into and attending a Youth Services/Programs or Child Care.
- If your children are attending Youth Services/Programs and you are in one of the other services, and your children would be unsupervised after the conclusion of the Youth Services/Programs, then you must make appropriate arrangements for the custody and management of your children after Youth Services/Programs have concluded. See Form #7.
- All children registered (deadline, September 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM) for Youth Services/Programs must have a name tag (which will also indicate a room assignment and a parent’s name). The Check-In and Name Tag Pick-Up Area will be located outside of Rooms 6 & 7. Once they have a name tag, children should be taken to the assigned room.
- Please do not bring children to the Check-In station – or to any classroom – before the designated start-time. Late arrivals will disrupt the flow of the program and the leaders’ effectiveness in managing the children.
- Children will not be permitted to wander unsupervised on synagogue property; these nomads will be returned to their designated program or their parents. Children who are disruptive or represent a safety or security risk will be returned to their parents.
- A light Kosher lunch will be served to the children late in the morning.
- Children are expected to remain in their designated program areas and cooperate with the program administrators and staff.
- There is no charge for our Youth Services/Programs; however, advance reservations are required. PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN FORM #6 TO THE SYNAGOGUE OFFICE ON OR BEFORE September 12, 2008, at 3:00 PM.
