High Holy Day Information

Important Event Information

Cell Phones

It is our custom to refrain from the use of electronic devices on synagogue grounds during Shabbat and Festivals. In addition, electronic devices (e.g., mobile phones) can interfere with our sound system, even when they are in “silent” or “vibrate” mode. Please keep the power off on the synagogue grounds. If you are a physician on call or expecting an urgent call during services, please let an usher know as soon as you arrive. The usher will explain the procedure for handling those calls. At least one usher, one Board member and one security guard at each site will have a portable phone which can be used in case of emergency.

Clothing
We request that congregants wear appropriate clothing that is in keeping with the solemn spirit of these Holy Days. All males should wear kippot at all times. We would appreciate all females covering their heads as well. Kippot, lace doilies, hairpins and tallitot (prayer shawls) are available at the entrance of all service venues. Anyone approaching the bimah for an honor or standing in front of the Aron HaKodesh for the Ne’ilah service must wear a head covering and tallit.

Medical Emergencies

We are well-equipped and prepared for medical emergencies. We have several emergency supply kits as well as an automatic electronic defibrillator. We will also have food available on Yom Kippur for diabetics. If you or someone around you needs emergency assistance, please contact an usher, Board member or security guard. They have the direct number for local police, fire department and ambulance service and can get you help immediately.

Parking

Attendance at High Holy Days services is always at capacity, and parking is limited. In order to facilitate traffic and parking, we ask for your cooperation in the following ways:

  • Please carpool as much as possible.
  • The fire lanes must be kept clear. Cars parked in the fire lanes will likely be cited and/or towed.
  • Please be considerate of our neighbors; please be careful not to park on any lawns or block any streets or driveways.
  • Please do not park beyond the end of Eckley Lane. At the bend, the street becomes a private road. Cars parked there will be subject to citation and/or towing.

Our neighbors at the Christian Science Church (at the corner of Walker and Eckley Lane) and the Unitarian Church (across the street) have once again offered to let us use their parking lots during the High Holy Days, the only exception being Erev Rosh Hashanah, Wednesday, September 28th. In order to accommodate their own congregants as both locations have services that evening starting at 7:30 PM, they have asked that we do not use their parking lots before 7:45 PM. The Christian Science Church keeps its windows open during services and they have asked that our congregants using their parking lot please keep noise to a minimum. When using these parking lots, please vacate them as soon as possible after services.

For information and reservations for disabled parking, please see the form Accommodations for the Physically Challenged.

Seating and Decorum
The mood of the High Holy Days is one of prayer and meditation. Please respect this mood during the services and as you enter and leave each place of worship. Ushers will be glad to help you, guide you, or assist you to a seat. If you are saving a seat for a family member inside the sanctuary or social hall, please be aware that ushers have been instructed to fill in any available seats one hour after the beginning of each service or at the beginning of the Torah service, whichever comes first.

During the chanting of Kol Nidrei and Hineni, as well as during sermons, addresses and Torah processions, ushers will keep the sanctuary doors closed in order to maintain a respectful mood inside. If you need to leave the sanctuary during one of those occasions, you may exit from the side vestibules. If you are not already inside the sanctuary at those times, you will be able to enjoy the service from Rooms 10 & 11, which will be set up with an audio and video feed. You may then enter the main sanctuary once the ushers reopen the doors.

Voices carry easily from outside into the sanctuary. If you need to have a private conversation during services, please do so away from the sanctuary and foyer areas.

As on Shabbat, smoking, writing and photography (including cell phone photography) are not allowed on the synagogue grounds.

Security

Security guards have been hired for our protection. They will be wearing name tags and may check for your ticket, child’s name tag and/or appropriate behavior prior to permitting entry into any place of worship. Please cooperate with them and let them know if you notice something suspicious.
